Trotsky has four goals here:1) To introduce American readers, briefly, to legitimate Marxist ideas.
2) To connect "The New Deal" and the imperialism of the day to Marxist theory and show them as the predictable path of Capitalism.
3) To show the coming world war as the inevitable extension of historical Capitalism, expressing itself as a division of markets.
4) To make his own predictions and calls for America and its role as the most developed "Mirror of Capitalism".
As to the first, it is a necessary evil for the genre. Trotsky couldn't in his time and we can't today assume an understanding of these principles among the audience.
I was very happy with his treatment of both the second and third items and there were good ideas and slogans throughout. Brevity prevented it from being more, but this work was originally written as an introduction to another work and so needed to meet its purpose briefly.
It is with the last that I think I see Trotsky fall down most often. He failed to do in the realm of foresight, what he does so well in retrospect and analyzing his contemporary society. In the end, Trotsky remains too bound to the lessons and ideas of the past to recognize how their manifestations in contemporary society will manifest and he fails to point us forward because of it.
His predictors and calls seem quaint now, as we reflect on the oft-underestimated resiliency of Capitalism in history.
I think the larger fault could lie with the Socialist Worker's Party, when they took this essay and repackaged it wit their own agenda, under this title, for the mass market.
